The classic stupid question I used to get asked all time when I worked retail was "how do I look in this outfit"? If you gotta ask, you probably already know the answer.
This is actually a role reversal but the other day I was in a checkout line and the lady in front of me was buying her child a plastic golf set. The cashier loudly asks the lady if she was seriously going to buy this for her child and starts stating how stupid of a sport golf is, how no real man would ever play such a gay sport and that people who grow up playing golf become gay and molesters. Imagine how the mother felt with her child hearing this ignorant nonsense from a woman who is being payed to serve the public.
To go off subject a little bit, I wonder if you find the stupid questions funny or frustrating. One reason people in the US have no problem asking staff stupid questions is b/c of the cost of services here. Another may be b/c there are no luxury hotels in the area between Atl and Chatnga and a lot of your customers may be used to a different level of hotel. This is in no way a negative reply to your posting but food for thought. I am a frequent international business traveler and marketing/consumer trends consultant I can tell you that you are not alone in receiving these types of questions. In the high-end hotels I work with staff are expected to answer or quickly find the answer to ANY question. I personally have no shame in asking the concierge or customer relations rep in a hotel things like can you check the weather predictions for the next 48 hours for my next destination (so I know whether I need a raincoat/umbrella for my carry-on bag). I ask them for the time in other cities/countries. I ask them to arrange for cars, tickets and restaurant reservations. I ask them to call airlines and confirm my flights and what time do I need to leave the hotel for the airport. I often ask them to arrange for me to exchange/buy currency for my next destination.
Sorry for rambling and I know that I got off the subject but this just hits close to home for me. I want us to regain the reputation of being top notch b/c I am very thankful that I am southern & american and I hate to hear people in other countries talk about how awful, rude and arrogant service staff in the US have become. I also hate that we are now rated as having some of the worst customer service in the world when just 10 years ago we were #1. Most of all I am sad about the loss of jobs and revenue that such a bad reputation has caused.
